Looking into the future the Pelican feeding its young from a self-induced wound in its own breast (as depicted, mysteriously, on the state flag of Louisiana) is accepted as an appropriate symbol of both self-sacrifice and rebirth. Through his selfless efforts, man is raised from the slavery of ignorance to the condition of freedom conferred by wisdom.
Given the current state of affairs in Louisiana, one hopes that the understanding of t he Pelican as a symbol shall point the way towards a new consciousness of ourselves as a whole, and lead us to face our futures with strength, grace, wisdom and faith, to learn from our mistakes and carry our successes and zest for living to future generations.

Destruction of Plaquemines Parish

Plaqemines Parish lies alongside the expanding Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, which is another horrendous United States Army Corps of Engineers BOO-BOO project. The wetlands in the parish have also been cut by 100's of oil company canals.

Save Our Wetlands (SOWL) joined with Plaquemines Parish & St. Bernard Parish residents to force the Corps to fill in the destructive expanding Mississippi River Gulf Outlet(MRGO). The Corps refused. The Corps won again. Unfortunately, the poor residents of St. Bernard, Plaquemines Parish and the 9th ward residents of Orleans Parish lost.

Massive oil company canals were "permitted" by the Corps without an Environmental Impact Statement(EIS) under the National Environmental Protection Agency(NEPA). SOWL filed a suit attempting to force the Corps to do an EIS under the NEPA. The Corps fought SOWL. The Corps won. Plaquemines Parish lost.

Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, the washout

Levee Breech

The MRGO and Intercoastal Waterway merge in New Orleans East. It's surmised that the storm surge rose from Lake Borgne breeching the levee (pictured above) from the lake side. Then pushed water up further at a greater rate and depth into the Intercoastal Waterway. Then into the Industrial Canal in the 9th ward, where the water toppled the levee and flooded the 9th ward with 10 to 20 foot of water. Where the water still sits trapped between the levees of the Intercoastal Waterway and Lake Pontchartrain. This is not a picture of the breech at the 17th Street Canal on the Jefferson Parish, Orleans Parish line. As of now the exact location is not known but it is most certainly somewhere along the MRGO and possibly the Intercoastal Waterway.
