Looking into the future the Pelican feeding its young from a self-induced wound in its own breast (as depicted, mysteriously, on the state flag of Louisiana) is accepted as an appropriate symbol of both self-sacrifice and rebirth. Through his selfless efforts, man is raised from the slavery of ignorance to the condition of freedom conferred by wisdom. Given the current state of affairs in Louisiana, one hopes that the understanding of the Pelican as a symbol shall point the way towards a new consciousness of ourselves as a whole, and lead us to face our futures with strength, grace, wisdom and faith, to learn from our mistakes and carry our successes and zest for living to future generations.

Letter to Senate and House Committee on Energy and National Resources

Re: Destruction of Louisiana Wetlands by Louisiana politicians Housing/Commercial development
schemes, promoting such developments in low lying flood plains extremely susceptible to hurricane tidal surges.

Dear Senate and House Committee Members on Energy and Natural Resources,

Please find enclosed SOWL’s April 12 and June 6, 2004 letters to the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs concerning the above captioned.

In summary, Louisiana politicians speak with forked tongues. On one side of their mouth they scream to U.S. Congress about the eroding Louisiana coastline and the need for billions of dollars in taxpayers’ monies to save Louisiana wetlands. On the other side of their mouth, they are promoting destruction of Louisiana wetlands for housing/commercial projects by their corporate backers.

The 2 billion dollar mega city now being proposed by Tammany Holding Corp. called Lakeshore Village/Estates over illegally drained wetlands on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain, St. Tammany Parish, Slidell, Louisiana, merits special attention. This area is in an unprotected flood plain, low lying and extremely susceptible to hurricane tidal surges. It is being pushed and backed by the local St. Tammany Parish Council (also see appeal to St. Tammany Parish Council) and Governor Kathleen Blanco. According to SOWL this 2 billion dollar mega city proposed to be built over wetlands is being propelled by an influential Louisiana politician with Washington D.C. connections. Supposedly this Louisiana politician received campaign contributions from agents of Tammany Holding Corp. However, SOWL has been unable to confirm this report as reliable.

Respectfully,
