Looking into the future the Pelican feeding its young from a self-induced wound in its own breast (as depicted, mysteriously, on the state flag of Louisiana) is accepted as an appropriate symbol of both self-sacrifice and rebirth. Through his selfless efforts, man is raised from the slavery of ignorance to the condition of freedom conferred by wisdom. Given the current state of affairs in Louisiana, one hopes that the understanding of the Pelican as a symbol shall point the way towards a new consciousness of ourselves as a whole, and lead us to face our futures with strength, grace, wisdom and faith, to learn from our mistakes and carry our successes and zest for living to future generations.

Landrieu Makes Environmentalists Blood Boil

RE: Editorial, SOWL responds to the Times-Picayune March 15, 2002 article

Senator Mary Landrieu says that Environmentalists make her blood boil but Save Our Wetlands, Inc. (SOWL) says the Senator makes THEIR blood boil. Senator Landrieu supports President Bush's push for oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and goes so far as to say that environmentalists have gone "too far" in trying to block the drilling. She also said that not drilling in the Arctic would result in drilling and exploration in a Third World country, where environmental laws are more lax, and that the environmental community is the cause of that destruction. Apparently, anyone objecting to the drilling, exploration and catastrophic destruction of a one-of-a-kind nature preserve makes her blood boil.

SOWL wants to ask Senator Landrieu how much money she has been paid by Oil and Gas?

SOWL demands Alternate Energy and Conservation NOW. We need to use Renewable Sources of Energy, greater use of solar and wind power. We need Electric cars NOW to free us from gas-guzzling SUVs, cars, and trucks. We must utilize renewable and sustainable forms of energy NOW.

Senator Landrieu says:

"I want to challenge the environmental community: Could you think about someone else besides us for a change? Could you think about the world?"

SOWL believes that Senator Landrieu is a good example of how our elected officials are puppets for huge corporate interests. She was elected from support of the Liberal environmentalist community in Louisiana, however, NOW she is committed to corporate backers. Her opponent for U.S. Senate was a Conservative Republican but at least everyone knew his position on the issues.

"Adam Kolton of the Alaskan Wilderness League said he was 'shocked and alarmed' by Landrieu's comments. He said they are reminiscent of those delivered by conservative Senate Republicans who routinely demonize environmentalists."

"'She has made no secret of her support for the oil and gas industry,' Kolton said. 'But what we heard today is that she is not a supporter of the millions of Americans, including those in Louisiana, who care about preserving the environment.'" Drilling for oil in the Arctic is NOT sustainable, it is short-sighted, and is just another greasy, selfish attempt by Oil and Gas to destroy our natural resources. The drilling and exploration in the area does irreparable damage to the pristine environment of the ANWR, a preserve that was originally created because of its natural beauty and its fragile ecosystem. Our children and future children must inherit these pristine preserves.

"Landrieu is among the few Democrats to publicly support President Bush's plan to drill in the Arctic refuge. She took the Senate floor Thursday to preview her amendment to the pending energy bill that would force all states to boost their production of energy or cut consumption, or face a loss of federal aid." Landrieu's push for Oil and Gas is a threat to our national security. Although Senator Landrieu herself says that our dependence on Oil and Gas from the Middle East has put our national security at risk, she continues to support the energy policy proposed by President Bush and Vice President Cheney that keeps us at risk with the Middle Eastern countries, contributes to the already fat pockets of the huge Oil and Gas Corporations, and destroys unique natural areas and preserves along the way.

SOWL demands Alternate Energy and Conservation NOW. We need to use Renewable Sources of Energy, greater use of solar and wind power. We need Electric cars NOW to free us from gas-guzzling SUVs, cars, and trucks. We must put renewable and sustainable forms of energy to good use and we must do it NOW.
